Workshop with Extracorporeal Shockwave Expert

In association with Storz Medical AG and Innomed Asia, East Coast Podiatry is honoured to have had Prof. Karsten Knobloch join us at our Orchard location to conduct a workshop on the latest advances in extracorporeal shockwave therapy. Prof. Knobloch, MD, FACS, is the President of the German Shockwave Society, as well as an approved instructor of the International Society for Medical Shockwave Treatment (ISMST).

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) has been in use since the 1980s, when it was first used for lithotripsy procedures in the operating theatre. As the technology was refined over the years, ESWT developed into a healthcare modality with a wide variety of applications.  Prof. Knobloch spoke about a range of indicated uses for ESWT including fracture healing, wound healing, nerve regeneration, and cellulite reduction. Clearly demonstrating an understanding of his audience, Prof. Knobloch focused on the role of ESWT in the healing of painful musculoskeletal conditions of the lower extremities.

ESWT has come a long way since its development in the 1980’s, with scores of international peer-reviewed research papers validating its dramatic efficacy in treating various types of chronic injury and pain. The day was spent engaging in a roundtable discussion of specific techniques and protocols in using the various types of ESWT which were accompanied by hands-on demonstration and training.  The ESWT workshop covered musculotendinous injuries such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis, soft tissue lesions such as Morton’s neuroma and ganglion cysts, and the healing of diabetic foot ulcers.

As an advanced modality for healing, ESWT empowers both healthcare practitioners and their patients. It offers a realistic alternative for curing many conditions which previously demanded invasive procedures. Even in just the lower extremities, we have found many evidence-based uses for ESWT.  However, the success of ESWT rests not solely upon the technology, but also on the knowledge and skill of the practitioner. It is hereby crucial for us to continually update our knowledge and techniques as new techniques and protocols are always being developed. We would like to thank Prof. Knobloch for sharing his time and expertise with us at East Coast Podiatry. Some of our group will be joining him again at the Shockwave Therapy Congress 2018, next week in New Zealand!
