When Kids Need Insoles—Really.
Friday, 12 September 2025
As parents, we’re always watching how our children move—how they walk, run, and climb. But when it comes to flat feet, unusual gait, or complaints of foot pain, it’s not always clear when to take action. Do they need insoles? Or will they grow out of it?
At East Coast Podiatry in Singapore, we frequently speak to concerned parents unsure if their child’s walking pattern is part of typical development or a sign that support is needed. And let’s be honest—there’s a lot of misinformation out there.
So here’s what we want you to know.
Not Every Child Needs Insoles
Let’s start with this: not every child needs insoles. But some do.
Babies and toddlers often appear flat-footed because their arches haven’t fully developed yet. That’s perfectly normal. But by around age 5 to 7, the arch should be forming, and gait patterns should start to resemble those of an adult.
If your child is still walking with:
- Noticeably flat feet or collapsed arches
- Feet that turn inwards or outwards
- Frequent tripping or clumsiness
- Complaints of foot, ankle, or knee pain
- Uneven shoe wear (e.g. shoes wearing out faster on one side)
…it may be time for a closer look.
The Role of Insoles in Paediatric Foot Care
Custom orthotics (also referred to as prescription insoles) are not “arch supports” you buy off the shelf. These are specially crafted to fit your child’s foot shape and correct biomechanical issues during the crucial years of development.
What do they actually do?
- Guide proper foot alignment as the body grows
- Reduce excess pressure on joints and soft tissue
- Improve balance and gait efficiency
- Support children with hypermobility, flat feet, or in-toeing
- Prevent early discomfort from turning into long-term issues
When prescribed by a podiatrist, insoles form just one part of a broader management plan, often paired with footwear advice, muscle strengthening, or stretching routines.
Early Intervention is Key
One common concern we hear is: “Should we wait and see?” While some conditions can improve naturally, others—like severe flat feet, frequent ankle sprains, or persistent pain—are better addressed early.
At our podiatry practices across Singapore, we review not just the feet, but also your child’s walking pattern, muscle strength, and joint flexibility. In some cases, simple footwear changes or a set of home exercises are all that’s needed. In others, we may recommend a pair of prescription orthotics made from a digital 3D foot scan.
The goal isn’t just to ‘support the arches’—it’s to help your child walk, run, and play with less strain on their developing body.
Why Choose a Podiatrist in Singapore?
Singapore’s children are growing up in an urban environment—spending long hours in school shoes, walking on hard surfaces, and carrying heavy bags. These factors can all contribute to lower limb stress.
At East Coast Podiatry, we work closely with parents to support children through each developmental stage. Our team is trained to pick up early signs of biomechanical issues and design insoles that adapt as your child grows.
It’s not about rushing into orthotics. It’s about knowing when they’re truly needed—and making sure they’re done right.
